Paris Township City Directory Shelves
Paris Township, Portage County is not an incorporated city with its own annual municipal directory. The reliable historical shelf is the Portage County, Kent, and Ravenna service area. Kent State University Special Collections and Archives identifies its physical telephone and directory collection as spanning 1918 through 2020. Its finding aid is evidence of the titles and where to consult them, not proof that every Paris Township household appeared in each edition.
Use the publisher, title, and edition date as part of every citation. Telephone books record subscribers, while a county directory may use a different editorial area. A Ravenna postal label can refer to an address outside the City of Ravenna. That distinction matters when a Paris Township family is missing from one book but appears in a county issue or a later edition.
| Collection | Years | Where held | Access |
|---|---|---|---|
| Portage County, Kent, and Ravenna telephone directories | 1918-2020 inclusive | Kent State Special Collections and Archives | Finding aid and physical collection; ask ahead about reading-room access. |
| Kent-Ravenna city directory and supplements | 1955, 1957, 1976, 1978-79 | Kent State collection | Consult the named volume for its actual coverage and arrangement. |
| Robinson's Portage County, Ohio Directory | 1959 | Kent State collection | County-wide issue worth checking for township listings. |
| ConSurvey directories | 1942; 1946-48; 1960-74, selected issues | Kent State collection | Use the edition date and supplement, if any, in notes. |
| Local history, yearbooks, cemetery and family files | Runs not published online | Reed Memorial Library and PCHS/PCCOGS | In-library or archival research; some material needs an appointment. |
The dated gaps are meaningful. The finding aid lists many titles, but no digitized Paris Township run or accessible directory-entry image was verified. A missing result can reflect subscription scope, a nearby community heading, or an unlisted number. It does not establish that a household was absent from the township.
Note: Record the exact title and year before comparing any directory clue with a Portage County land, cemetery, or census record.
Paris Township City Directory Years at Kent State
The Kent State sequence starts with the July 1918 Portage County Telephone Company Directory for Ravenna and Mantua, followed by a 1921 Kent City Directory and Ohio State Telephone Company directories for Kent, Ravenna, and Mantua. Later holdings include recurring Kent-Ravenna-Mantua telephone books, the 1955 city directory and supplement, the 1957 directory, and issues from 1976 through 1979. A 1985-86 Portage County Ohio Area Directory, 1990-91 Portage County Directory, and later telephone books extend the shelf.
The 1959 Robinson's county issue is especially useful because its title is county-wide rather than tied to one city. ConSurvey editions provide another dated series from the 1940s into 1974. These are not interchangeable records. Copy the name as printed, including initials, then note the edition's place name and publication type before deciding whether an address belongs to Paris Township.

The wider Portage research network helps identify a title or repository before an in-person directory search begins.
Paris Township City Directory Research Rooms
Reed Memorial Library's local-history room is on the second floor and keeps city directories, cemetery transcriptions, family histories, local-history books, and Portage County school yearbooks for use in the library. Staff and volunteers experienced with local and genealogy work can help with research appointments or inquiries at genealogy@reedlibrary.org. Because its web page does not publish a complete directory-year inventory, ask for a named title, year, surname, or nearby postal community instead of requesting a broad search.
The Portage County Historical Society library and the Portage County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society provide the older local layer. Their non-lending material includes archival collections, photographs, maps, and ledgers. Some special materials need an appointment and, in some cases, membership. The Paris Township file or drawer is useful when an ordinary city directory leaves out a rural household.
The Historical Society's research holdings include original tax material, probate packets, obituary and surname indexes, poll books, cemetery indexes, diaries, letters, scrapbooks, and original marriage indexes.
Those records can test a directory date against a family, property, or locality reference without treating the directory as a complete resident list.
Reading a Paris Township City Directory
No individual page from the Kent State holdings was available during the research, so its entries should not be described from a generic city-directory pattern. Open the selected volume first and photograph or note its abbreviation key and arrangement. Then make a small inventory of what that particular entry actually prints. A telephone book can have a narrower field set than a city directory, and a county book may organize places differently.
| Name as printed | Capture spelling, initials, and any nearby locality heading exactly as shown. |
|---|---|
| Address or locality | Record it only if the selected edition prints one, then compare it with the period's postal geography. |
| Telephone or subscriber clue | Preserve it only when printed; a subscriber is not automatically every household member. |
| Relationship or occupation notation | Transcribe it only if that edition supplies it; the finding aid does not prove a universal format. |
| Edition evidence | Save title, publisher, year, page, and section so another researcher can repeat the check. |
- Criss-cross directory
- A directory arranged by address or street rather than alphabetically by name. Verify that a selected local volume has this section before relying on it.
- Householder index
- An index intended to identify a household or address under the volume's own rules; it is not the same as a complete census.
- Abbreviation key
- The printed legend that explains a volume's shortened words and marks. Read it before interpreting an entry.
Note: When a notation is unclear, preserve the printed form and seek a second dated record rather than expanding an abbreviation by guesswork.
Paris Township City Directory Place Names
Directory research needs more than a modern place name. The 1874 Portage County atlas identifies an earlier Storrsborough name and records early roads, drainage, grazing, and post-office history. It also places township organization in fall 1820. These are geographic leads from a period atlas, not a substitute for a later address record. A historical item may use Paris Township, a nearby postal community, a county-road description, or Storrsborough.
That changing language explains why one name search is rarely enough. Compare spelling variants, nearby place headings, maps, and the legal description from a deed. A Ravenna postal city label can describe a Paris Township physical address without putting that address in the City of Ravenna. The county and postal geography must be kept separate in notes.
Tracing Paris Township City Directory Households
A city directory becomes most useful when followed across editions rather than read alone. Begin with a present parcel address and legal description from the Auditor, then choose a historical period. Search the selected Portage, Kent, or Ravenna title by surname and place-name variants. If the person appears, save the page citation before moving to adjoining editions. If the person does not appear, try a county title, the nearby postal community, or a historical repository instead of calling the absence conclusive.
- Write down the contemporary situs address, parcel number, legal description, and the titled owner's name from the Auditor record.
- Select a dated directory volume from the Kent State finding aid, then search spelling variants and nearby community headings.
- Compare the next available edition, keeping the edition date, printed address, and any confirmed subscriber detail separate.
- Pair the period with public federal census releases. PCCOGS has Portage County census microfilm for 1820-80 and 1900-30, while later releases need confirmation through the appropriate archives route.
- Test a move, death, or estate clue with a deed, probate, obituary, or cemetery record and cite each item on its own terms.
Federal census material is a household snapshot, not an annual record. A directory disappearance can mean a move, an unlisted telephone, a changed publisher area, or another ordinary coverage limit. The strongest conclusion follows only after the period directory, the census, and a property or family record point to the same time and place.
Paris Township City Directory Companions
PCCOGS obituary-clipping notebooks cover roughly 1879/80 through 2002, with a developing surname index and a published copy or scan price of $3 per page. Its resources also include cemetery volumes, wills, estates, guardianship indexes, poll-book transcriptions, maps, and census material. These sources can establish whether a directory finding belongs to the intended family, especially where a surname repeats.
Newspapers add a date, spelling, or community context, but must be read in the original notice or microfilm. The documented runs include the Garrettsville Journal, Western Courier, Ohio Star, Kent Courier, Portage Sentinel, and Portage County Democrat, each with its stated years or gaps. Newspaper text remains a contemporaneous publication, not a replacement for an official vital, court, or land record.
Paris Township City Directory and Hawley Clues
Hawley Cemetery supplies a different, locally specific historical trail. The Paris Township burial database begins with a single surname initial, and a selected record can provide a name, age, sex, death information, late residence, veteran notation, remarks, and section, lot, or grave placement where data exist. The Township warns that completeness and spelling consistency cannot be assumed, so treat each result as a lead to be checked.
Hawley Cemetery's burial-record search is the source for the surname-first lookup shown here.
Match a burial clue to a cemetery contact, a lot or deed inquiry where maintained, Probate Court material, an obituary, or historical-society cemetery volumes. It can close a family-history trail, but it cannot establish every person who lived at a nearby address.
Paris Township City Directory Access Limits
Several access channels remain important when a web search fails. Kent State holds the directory collection physically, Reed Memorial offers in-library local history, and the Historical Society/PCCOGS collections require a focused question and may require an appointment. For older property evidence, the Portage County Recorder online name index begins in 1979 and printable images begin in 2001. Earlier work needs the Recorder counter, historical books, or archives.
The 2026 PCCOGS Ravenna Arsenal displacement project includes Paris Township homes, farms, and families affected from 1940 through 1943. For an affected property, do not assume a modern road or house relationship stayed continuous. Bring maps, deeds, tax records, directory editions, newspapers, and the historical-society township material into the same dated trail. A modern person check, when needed after historical research, belongs in an official resident lookup, not in a historical directory alone.
